This week in Kindergarten
Spring has sprung and our Kindergarten students have been exploring different elements of this season! French Immersion students have been growing their literacy skills by applying many of the phonetic sounds we have practiced to independently write about what they see, wear, do, and hear in springtime.
As spring is a time of growth, we’ve extended our understanding of spring to begin discussing life cycles of plants, people, and animals. We’ve used this knowledge to sequence the life cycles of different things around us by arranging pictures in the correct order.
We also put on our scientist hats this week to explore 3D shapes a bit more! We wanted to find out if each shape could slide (glisse), roll (roule), or do both (les deux). We designed and built declining ramps with blocks, made some predictions, then put a variety of 3D shapes to the test! Students learned that shapes with round sides roll, those with flat sides slide, and some shapes have both so they can do both.
Finally, students have been practicing some ball handling skills by exploring volleyball activities! Our biggest goal has been controlling these new balls. Students have practiced passing in a variety of ways, bumping the ball on their forearms, and even keeping it away from each other during Monkey in the Middle!
REQUEST - Stuffie Measurement
As students continue learning about animals, lifecycles, and exploring the world around them, we will be hosting a “stuffie measurement” day in Kindergarten! We are asking that each student bring in ONE stuffie that will remain at school for about a week. This should be labeled with your child’s name (on a piece of tape or on a tag). These will be stored in the classroom, and sent home after we have had some time to present, measure, and compare our stuffies!
Please send a stuffie for next week! Students will begin with a brief presentation of their stuffie on Wednesday, May 18. As a side note - we don’t normally allow students to bring in toys from home, as these can be lost or damaged and cause some unfairness/unhappiness at school, so this activity is an EXCEPTION to this rule. This is the only toy we are currently requesting.
Snack Reminders
Please review some important reminders about our classroom snack time:
- NO PEANUTS/TREE NUTS/CLOVES (allergies in our Kindergarten classes).
- Please pack an extra snack with your growing child (many PM students have been arriving at school without snacks after their morning care).
- Snacks should be easily opened by the student (fruit snack packets are difficult for many - please open these in advance, put a small cut in the pack, or practice at home with your child).
- Pack a full water bottle each day.
