Bonjour! Hello! Oki! Kindergarten families,
This week in Kindergarten
Students have been busy at school this week as we wrapped up EYE-TA assessments and engaged in a variety of activities! We will be reviewing the data collected from EYE assessments and discussing this during the upcoming Learning Conferences (Nov. 25 & 26).
We have started an inquiry unit about MONSTERS! Our learning will include both literacy and numeracy skill development as we create our own Monsters! This week students have practiced drawing monsters with our Roll-A-Monster dice game (Rouler un monstre), learned about the variety by reading several Monster books, and discussing our Monster’s attributes in small and large groups.
Our PM Classes created 3D line art. Students were manipulating stips of paper based on specific techniques to create their sculptures. They have also given their work a name, and these will be displayed in our hallway! We’re looking forward to completing this lesson with our AM classes on their next Friday.
This past Tuesday morning, Tuscany School had a Lockdown practice! We let the students know in advance, and discussed the reasons we might have a Lockdown (moose on the playground, wasps/skunk in the hallway, etc) and the importance of taking them seriously. AM Kindergarten students were very responsible, quiet, and patient during the practice! In the future, Lockdown practices won’t be announced, so feel free to have a follow-up conversation with your child, particularly if your child is in a PM class, to discuss what a Lockdown is and how we should behave (listen to adults, sit silently, do not open the door, etc.).
MRU Teacher Candidates
Our MRU Teacher Candidates began full-time in our classrooms this week, and will be staying with us for a total of 5 weeks! Students have been so excited to build this new relationship, and we are so lucky to have this opportunity to work with them.
Our Teacher Candidates taught us a fun game during PE called Caterpillar Riot! Students worked in small team groups to collect as many “treats” as possible. This activity had us practicing some gross-motor skills, as well as teamwork and cooperation to achieve our goals!
Remembrance Day
Kindergarten students have continued learning about Remembrance Day by completing Kandinsky-inspired poppies for the Kindergarten wreath and learning the poem “There Stands a Soldier” (“Un soldat se tient là”) by Audrey Waters. We discussed why we honour Remembrance Day and the importance of remembering events from the past. Students made connections to Orange Shirt Day by noticing how we have these important days to remind ourselves and others that we never want such bad things to happen now or in the future.
Students at Tuscany School will be honouring Remembrance Day by creating a school-wide video in place of meeting in an assembly. This will be viewed by every class on November 10th at school, and a link will be available for families to watch. Students are invited to dress in uniform on November 10th to honour Remembrance Day (Guides, Scouts, etc.).
