Bonjour! Hello! Oki! Kindergarten Families,
Welcome to October! We are amazed with how much growth has happened in our first month of school. Students have been working to demonstrate their independence (joining class line-ups at drop-off, caring for their personal belongings, etc.), understanding their roles and responsibilities in our classroom community, as well as developing and maintaining relationships with peers and teachers.
This Week In Kindergarten
Fine motor skills have become a focus with our cutting centres, letter formation tracing, and using sand trays to practice drawing lines. Building competency with fine motor aids in our ease for pencil grip, drawing and letter formation, as well as stamina for focused work when writing, drawing, and colouring, etc.
Students engaged in discussions and learning about Orange Shirt Day, and the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. We discussed the origin of the day and Phyllis Webstad’s story. We connected this with the saying “Chaque enfant compte” (Every Child Matters). Through the story “Tout petit toi” by Richard Van Camp, we discussed how every child is important and special to those around them. We created orange shirts and recorded our own “Je compte parce que…” (I matter because…) statements. Thank you to everyone who continued these important conversations at home. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
It was also wonderful to observe how students have begun to expand and alter their engagement with play. We have added a light table and sand tray explorations, which have allowed a great opportunity to practice patience (as they’re very popular!). Students are practicing using their voice and interpersonal skills to discuss moments of conflict and finding compromise/resolution within themselves.
